Uniting Against Supply Chain Fraud: A Call for Congressional Action
TIA is rallying support from Congressional leaders and industry stakeholders – including trucking, rail, retailers and major carriers like UPS – to address a growing crisis: fraud within the nation’s supply chain. According to the TIA’s State of Fraud in the Industry 2024 Report, cargo theft incidents have surged by an alarming 600% over the past year, costing the industry an average of $402,000 annually per incident and nearly $40,760 per load. The National Insurance Crime Bureau estimates total cargo theft losses could reach between $15 billion and $30 billion each year.
In response, TIA has been actively advocating on Capitol Hill for essential legislation to safeguard our supply chain. Key proposals include:
· H.R. 8505, The Household Goods and Shipping Consumer Protection Act: Spearheaded by Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-D.C.) and Rep. Mike Ezell (R-Miss.), this bill seeks to enhance the authority of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) to impose violations in household goods and general freight shipping.
· H.R. 8834, the Safeguarding Our Supply Chains Act: Introduced by Rep. David Valadao (R-Calif.) and Rep. Brad Schneider (D-Ill.), this legislation aims to establish a Supply Chain Coordination Center and a Supply Chain and Theft Task Force, led by the Department of Homeland Security’s Homeland Security Investigations (HIS) and the FBI.
With a united voice, TIA urges its members and the public to contact their local representatives and advocate for these critical legislative measures. Together, we can combat the rampant theft affecting our industry and protect consumers from its devastating impacts. Your voice matters – act now!
