The Creation of the World’s Largest Freight Broker Compensation Survey

In 1998 Beth Carroll started working with Towers Perrin (now Willis Towers Watson) as a Sales Compensation Consultant. During her tenure, she became intimately familiar with compensation surveys and how they supported rational decision making about compensation (for new hires, promotions, etc). She knew that companies couldn’t even begin to think about competitive compensation design without crucial market research. Designing compensation plans without market knowledge leaves companies shooting in the dark as to how much they really need to pay to attract and retain the talent they need.
In 2008, Beth began the journey that would lead to the development of Prosperio Group after identifying the need for specialized compensation design in the transportation and logistics industry that went beyond a traditional consultancy. After working with a couple freight brokers, Beth realized that this market was misunderstood and therefore underserved by the big-name consulting firms. Basic compensation design principles such as TTC or OTE were unfamiliar to most in the industry and there was a woeful lack of good data on compensation levels for the very specialized roles that exist in Freight Brokers.
In 2009, Beth began collaborating with TIA to evaluate their original compensation survey. It was serviceable, yes, but she immediately identified areas that could benefit from a makeover. And then, as fate would have it, a year later, with daydreams about the perfect brokerage survey filling up her legal pads, Prosperio was hired to conduct a Large Broker Compensation Survey (now its own exclusive program!) and the stars aligned to finally get that project off the paper and into reality. With the help of a developer who had been one of Beth’s Kellogg Business School cohorts, Beth’s daydreams came true and MeasureUp was launched in March of 2012, right before that year’s TIA show.
With the support of the TIA and its members, MeasureUp has been collecting compensation data and turning it into easily accessible reports and navigable tools ever since! Over the last 13 years, Beth has been nurturing the program and continually improves it to ensure the best possible value is provided to MeasureUp contributors and subscribers.
Currently, it is the best source of market data for freight brokers and is the only survey that covers broker specific roles like Carrier Sales, Track & Trace, and the many unique hybrid roles such as Cradle to Grave Broker. Prosperio, TIA, and therefore, MeasureUp understand the distinct differences of brokerage sales roles compared to similar roles in completely different industries. Transportation & Logistics is a league of its own, and using tools built for other industries ignores what makes it unique (and tarnishes the usefulness of the data). Which is why MeasureUp is built by people in Transportation & Logistics for people in Transportation & Logistics.
Now, the 2024 MeasureUp season has arrived! Don’t worry – that’s not a typo, it’s referring to the year the data represents. With every new submitted survey, data becomes more diverse and more accurate, so MeasureUp becomes more valuable for everyone! We encourage all TIA members to submit their data as soon as possible, which includes 3 months of access to the database and a final report completely free of charge. Please email MeasureUp@prosperiogroup.com to learn more.
In times like these, it’s easy to succumb to fear. Nevertheless, the Transportation and Logistics industry will soldier on like we always do. When nothing is certain, you can rest assured that data is dependable.
