How Freight Brokers Can Build Better Relationships with Carriers

Share

As a freight broker, it helps to have a reliable network of carriers to pick up and deliver your loads. Developing such a network takes time and effort, but to make the process easier, here’s a list of strategies you can use to foster stronger relationships with your carriers.

Pay Fast

Carriers want to be paid, and they want it fast. Postponing payment for their services can frustrate them and cause them to avoid booking loads with you in the future. Paying carriers promptly proves your trustworthiness and helps build stronger relationships.

Provide Detention Pay

Detention is one of the unfortunate realities of logistics. You can support your carriers by paying detention fees on their behalf. This shows you’re looking out for their interests and willing to help them when issues arise.

Be Transparent in Your Pricing

Transparency in your pricing is another great way to build trust. Clearly explain how you arrive at the rates you offer and how current market conditions shape your decision. You should also avoid last-minute reductions and charging hidden fees.

Simplify Your Vetting Process

A thorough vetting process is essential when selecting a reliable carrier. That said, if the process is too lengthy and overly complicated, it could drive away qualified carriers. Streamlining the process will speed up onboarding while ensuring you hire reliable transportation providers.

Address Carrier Feedback

Making it easier for a carrier to do their job will make them want to take more shipments from you in the future. Common complaints include poor communication, unrealistic delivery windows, lack of accountability, and detention. Many of these issues are easy, and often cost little or nothing to fix.

Highlight Your Credentials

Carriers want to work with reliable freight brokers that aren’t going to take advantage of their services. You can prove your reliability to carriers by showing a few credentials, including:

  • Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Registration
  • Industry Memberships
  • Company Certifications

Building strong relationships with your carriers will allow you to reap a variety of benefits. Just remember: it takes time to build a strong network. Focus on providing excellent service to both your customers and carriers. If you do this, you’ll develop a reliable group of transportation providers in no time.
